Midday Ramblers: Shore AC Rocks Dedham!
Like Mick Jagger and the timeless Rolling Stones, the masters runners from Shore Athletic Club defy their age. They proved it once again at the 2024 James Joyce Ramble 10K race in Dedham, Massachusetts. But given that the race was held in the late morning, we must call our SAC heroes the mid-day ramblers. Read all about the Shore AC heroics below while you enjoy The Stones' Midnight Rambler here as background inspiration.
The Shore AC women's 60+ team blew the roof off with a tremendous victory in Dedham! Coureuse non pareil Suzanne La Burt extended her unbeaten streak to six national races as a 60-year-old. She scorched the streets with a fiery 40:59 to lead the team. Surprisingly, however, her magnificent age grading of 92.68% barely cracked the top 5 among women. That shows you how utterly stocked with talent was this race. One of the four who scored a higher age grading was teammate Nora Cary. Despite being in the final year of the 65-69 age group, Nora destroyed her age group competition -- including highly regarded Stella Gibbs, who had just aged up into the group -- with a jaw-dropping time of 42:58. That equated to an incomprehensible age grading of 99.81%, second among women. With two runners having finished, the question became whether third scorer Debi Brathwaite could register a fast enough time to defeat their rival team from the Liberty Athletic Club. Debi delivered! Her snappy time of 51:28 allowed the W60+ team to prevail with 90 seconds to spare. With the victory, Shore AC pulled even with Liberty in the 2024 National Grand Prix. Stay tuned as we follow this exciting battle through the remainder of the year!
Under normal circumstances, 68-year-old Susan Stirrat would have run for our W60+ team and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her teammates on the podium. However, we had a problem. Only two 50+ Shore AC women had registered for Dedham. This was one less than the minimum of 3 for a W50+ team. So, Susan graciously switched to the 50+ squad, thereby making it complete. Alysia Puma got the W50+ team rolling with an excellent time of 45:10. Maureen Massell contributed a terrific 47:24 as second scorer. Stirrat's superb 53:01 as third woman secured the trio a fifth-place finish within the field of seven W50+ teams. More importantly, the Shore AC women's 50+ team maintained its first-place status in the 2024 Grand Prix. GO, LADIES!!!
Meanwhile, the Shore AC men were rocking Dedham with their own amped-up romps. Like the adage "everything old is new again", the club rolled out a new look for its 70+ team. National Masters Athlete Emeritus Reno Stirrat celebrated his entry into the 70+ age bracket by ripping a hot 43:58 to start the party. New club member Rick Boyle belied his 72 years of age by closing just behind Reno in 44:00. Club veteran Paul Deykerhoff made his first appearance in a national road race by contributing a solid 57:48. With the team's fourth-place finish, Shore AC finally made it onto the scoreboard in the 2024 M70+ Team Grand Prix. Bravo, graybeards! May this be the start of BIG things to come!
Many eyes were on the men's 60+ competition. It featured a showdown between Shore AC and Atlanta. Shore AC's M60+ team began the 2024 Grand Prix with two victories. However, they entered no squad at the third event, namely the 5K race in Atlanta. Atlanta's M60+ squad took advantage of Shore AC's absence and vaulted into first place in the Grand Prix with a victory. The two teams would now go head-to-head in Dedham. Alas for Shore AC, #2 man Henry Notaro felt compelled to withdraw 2 days before the race due to knee issues. (He had run the Boston Marathon less that 2 weeks prior.) Analysis suggested that Atlanta now held the advantage. But our Shore AC superheroes vowed to give it their all! The sensational Mark Zamek staked Shore AC's M60+ crew to a sizeable lead when he nailed a phenomenal 36:08, good for second place in the 60-64 age group. Second-year powerhouse Miles Hersey threw down a terrific 42:19 as second scorer. When 68-year-old Kevin Dollard flew down East Street to slam the door on team scoring with an excellent 42:55, it was time to add up the team scores. As expected, Atlanta prevailed. However, Shore AC did snare second place! Teammate Gary Wiesinger stood proudly on the podium with his buddies, having contributed all-important backup insurance with a mighty fine 44:35. Stay tuned as Shore AC and Atlanta continue the 2024 Grand Prix duel! Hip-hip-hooray!
69-year-old Shore AC veteran Barry Blake also competed at Dedham. Because of a residency restriction, we couldn't include Barry on our men's 60+ squad. So, Barry represented the Shore AC M60+ B team. Race-walking, he strode briskly through the hilly 10K course in a very impressive time of 1:09:51. Kudos to Barry!
An important point regarding the Grand Prix: it is a test of quality and quantity. In the younger age divisions especially, you can place high in the Grand Prix by doing a decent number of races even if you don't reach the podium in those races. Witness the Shore AC men's 50+ team. Coming into this 10K race, they occupied third place in the 2024 Grand Prix simply by having placed 6th at the XC in Richmond and the 5K in Atlanta. As he did in those two previous races, Jeff Conston spearheaded the M50+ charge. He galloped home in 37:52, good for seventh place in his stacked 55-59 age group. Shore AC stalwart Bob Shields celebrated his first national road race by dashing down the chute in 42:27. But, dear reader, the M50+ team would have been incomplete had 69-year-old Hal Leddy not agreed to drop down to the 50+ team. Hal's strong 44:34 wrapped up team scoring, positioning it fifth within a field of ten teams. The corresponding 60 points pushed the Shoe AC M50+ squad up to second place in the 2024 National Grand Prix. Well done, lads!!!
The 2024 USATF Masters National Grand Prix now shifts to the West Coast and the running of the Mile of Truth in Danville, California on May 19. Shore AC will likely skip that race and focus instead on the 10-mile event in Flint, Michigan, on August 24, followed by the 12K in Highlands, New Jersey, on September 15.
GOOOOOOOO SHORE AC!!!!!
PS: Many thanks to Reno Stirrat for serving as overall team captain for the Dedham trip. A big thank you as well to the individual team captains: Hal Leddy (M50+), Kevin Dollard (M60+), Reno (M70+), Alysia Puma (W50+) and Debi Brathwaite (W60+). Finally, a hoot and a holler to Team Mom De Dollard!!!!
